Police advice re doorstep callers
Posted on January 07 2015
Police are advising residents to protect themselves from doorstep callers following two unrelated incidents on Monday 5th January.
- In Horsley, around 6.30pm a man claimed he was a released young offender and offered goods from a bag. He is described as being white with a pale complexion, around 24-years-old, around 5’5” tall, wearing a beany hat, a black coat, and carrying an Addidas bag.
- In the Windermere Road area in Chesterfield around 11.50am a man riding a white mountain bike appeared to be targeting elderly persons bungalows trying to sell door bells. He is described as being white, in his 40s, around 5’9” tall, bald head, medium build, wearing a blue puffa jacket and dark trousers. In similar previous incidents across Chesterfield the bells were considered to be of poor quality.
Community Safety Inspector Russ Dakin said: “I would like to encourage residents to remain cautious and to report any suspicious activity to us on 101 to help us to prevent a crime from happening.
“If someone calls at your door, always ask for identification and if they are selling goods, ask for their pedlar’s certificate. Remember, genuine callers will not mind assisting while you make these checks.
“Do not feel pressured into buying from a caller. Question whether you really need the goods or services they are offering and don’t be obliged to buy or sign up to anything on the spot. You may get a better deal if you shop around or get alternative quotes.”
Other crime prevention advice includes:
- Never invite a stranger into your home; if they ask to use the toilet, for a drink or to make a call then direct them to the nearest public facilities;
- Keep an eye out for your neighbours and report any suspicious activity to police by noting down any information you have including descriptions of anyone in the area and the details of any vehicles.
